Siliguri, Feb 21: The Centre has funded Rs 3.5 crore for hosting Tea Tourism Festival for promotion of touring in the tea estates of North Bengal.

Deputy Director of West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation Gopal Lama told sources that the Union Tourism Ministry has allocated Rs 3.5 crore this week for hosting the festival.

However, dates and venue will be announced later, he added.

He said the fund came after submission of a proposal for development of tea tourism, in North Bengal and particularly ailing tea estates.

Mr Lama said the 'tea tourism' can attract foreign as well as domestic tourists visiting this region.

According to a statistic over 1.5 crore tourists had visited the Northern region of Bengal in the last five years. Of them 5 lakh were foreign travellers.
