Mizo admn deletes Mithun sacrifice; Chapchar Kut

Aizwal, Feb 21: In the face of stiff opposition from animal rights activists and religious scholars, the Mizoram administration has decided to delete Mithun sacrifice from Chapchar Kut, the biggest community festival in the state.

Official sources said here today that Chapchar Kut organising committee deliberated on the issue in a meeting yesterday and decided not to sacrifice Mithun in the festival, scheduled on March 9 and 10.

Biaksiama had raised their voice against the proposed Sechhun ceremony (spearing of Mithuns) in Chapchar Kut.

Sechhun goes against the provisions of Section 11 of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, IPC and The Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, they said.
