BESU's teachers and students go on hunger strike
Howrah, Feb 21 (UNI) Teachers and students of the Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) today boycotted all classes and went on a relay hunger strike demanding upgradation of the institute.
The agitation of the professors took new turn today when the students joined the former demanding implementation of the recommendation of the Anandkrisnan Committee for upgration of the BESU.
BESU's Teacher Union Secretary Sujoy Mukherjee has expressed concern of the Centre for alleged neglect of this premier engineering college of the country.
Mr Mukherjee told UNI that BESU had given an ultimatum of 72 hrs for addressing their demand or else the agitation would be intensified further.
Blaming both the centre and state governments for remaining 'silent' on the issue, Dr Mukherjee said though the Anandkrisnan Committee's recommendation was submitted to the Ministry of Human Resources Development in February last year to declare BESU as an autonomous institute and make necessary budgetory allocation for it within a timeframe, nothing had so far been done.
