SMC begins cleaning of Tapi river
Surat, Feb 20 (UNI) Alarmed over high levels of pollution and the appearance of some red organisms in Tapi river's Varachcha water treatment plant of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), the civic body began an intensive cleaning process in Tapi river bed at Ashwini Kumar area in Varachcha zone, sources said today.
An action plan formed for this purpose by Varachcha Zonal Chief J K Shah and Zonal Officer R V Gamit, found polluted water was being released through canals and other forms of outlets into the river.
It was therefore decided that an intensive cleaning process in Tapi near Ashwini Kumar area was the need of the hour as the water was highly polluted there.
SMC had recently closed down the water distribution from Varachcha waterworks after some red oraganisms appeared in the water. Similar cleaning up operation will be undertaken by other zones also.
SMC has decided to build around 10 toilets and open showers in the area to reduce river water pollution, sources added.
