India should not be silent spectator on Lankan Issue: CPI

Tiruchirapalli, Feb 20 (UNI) India should not be a silent spectator on the Sri Lankan issue but should facilitate meaningful dialogue between the island government and the LTTE, CPI National Secretary D Raja said today.

Addressing a press meet here this evening, Mr Raja said a military solution would not be permanent. Expressing concern over the ceasefire agreement between LTTE and Sri Lankan Government ending, he said this had led to a war like situation and created tremendous tension. If the situation worsened, people would leave Sri Lanka for India, which would burden India. The CPI had conveyed its apprehensions to the Indian Government.

Both parties should honour the agreement and talks should be resumed. Only a political solution could solve the issue.

When a reporter drew to his attention to the recent remarks of Defence Minister A K Antony on the seizure of a suspected LTTE boat with arms off the Tamil Nadu coast, Mr Raja said it was the tip of the iceberg and more such incidents could have remained unnoticed.

The Indian government should fully examine and elaborate the statement.

On the Samjauhta train blast, he said the Union Government should ensure least number of lapses and at the same time the Pakistani Government should be equally responsible for ensuring peace. when the scribes drew his attention about the train bomb blasts of Panipat.

Terrorists were making desperate attempts to disrupt the ongoing dialogue process between India and Pakistan but both countries should remain committed to it.
