Tiruchirapalli, Feb 20 (UNI) The Central Railway Workshop at Golden-Rock (GOC) here has bagged orders to refurbish the old Meter Gauge (MG) locomotives for use in Myanmar railways.

Talking to reporters here, Southern Railway (SR) General Manager Thomas Varghese said the GOC had modified 93 locomotives and exported them through RITES to other third world countries.

With more than 65 per cent of the tracks being converted into Broad Gauge (BG), the SR had surplus number of used MG locomotives.

Under the new order, the workshop would modify 25 locomotives meant for Myanmar and another 10 for tracks in Mozambique, he said.

The orders would be executed before the end of next fiscal, he said.

Mr Varghese said the workshop was presently busy in manufacturing flat wagons, which were also known as Low Bogie Container wagons for the Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR).

The workshop, after manufacturing 990 units, which would earn a revenue of Rs 261 crore, would undertake to execute the orders for 1125 wagons worth about Rs 280 crore.

He said the Railway Ministry had decided to convert all the coal fired engines running on the Nilgris Mountain Railways (NMR) into oil-fired locomotives.
