SC upholds the sentence in LeT funding case

New Delhi, Feb 19 (UNI) The Supreme Court has upheld the conviction and sentence of a person under Section 22 of POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) for providing funds to a LeT militant through hawala channels.

A Bench comprising Justices S B Sinha and Markandey Katju, dismissed the appeal of Harbans Singh, sentenced to 14 years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for giving Rs seven lakh to LeT militant Mohammad Ayub Mir.

Harbans Singh and Mir were arrested near the Certral Bank of India Branch in Connaught Place on July 2, 2002. Mir was sentenced to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 1000 for offences under Section 3 (5) of POTA and to 10 years RI for offence under Section 20.

Mir, a surrendered militant of JKLF, was under surveillance of special cell of Delhi police as he was wanted by Jammu and Kashmir police. It was on the basis of their information that the two were apprehended. Delhi High Court had confirmed the trial court judgement on January 9, 2006.

Dismissing the appeal, the Apex Court, the judgement dated February 15 noted The Apex Court concluded " The High Court has considered all submissions of the accused in detail in its well considered judgement and we see no reason to interfere with the same.

The appeal is dismissed." UNI
