Mattoo case: SC stays death sentence of Santosh

New Delhi, Feb 19: The Supreme Court today stayed till further orders the Delhi High Court judgement awarding death sentence to Santosh Kumar Singh, son of a retired IPS officer, in the Priyadarshini Mattoo rape and murder case.

The interim stay was granted by a bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan while admitting the petition and issuing notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation on an appeal against the High Court's judgement filed by the convict.

37-year-old Santosh Kumar Singh had challenged his conviction and sentence on the grounds that the High Court order was not based on 'evidence on the record' and his acquittal by the trial correct was correct and proper.
