SC issues notices to UP to ban bone mills in populated areas
New Delhi, Feb 19 (UNI) The Supreme Court today issued notices to the state of Uttar Pradesh on a PIL seeking ban on setting up of bone mills in the populated areas as bacterial decomposing of the animal flesh creates unbearable smell and pollutes the environment.
The counsel for the petitioner Devendra Kumar Tyagi contended before a bench, comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Raveendran, that the smell emanating from the mills and allied industries was unbearable and the Central Pollution Control Board has already recommended that such mills should be located away from human habitation atleast, at a distance of not less than 2 km.
He also contended that these bone mills are highly detrimental for the environment.
The petitioner had requested the Court to direct the respondent not to develop the proposed Leather City Yojna at Hapur and the project should be shifted outside the densely populated area.
The petitioner has also sought directions from the Court not to disposess the petitioner of land in Imtori and Pargana villages of Hapur and Gaziabad districts of Uttar Pradesh.
