JK: Police accuses Army officials of beating a cop

Jammu, Feb 19: A joint inquiry was ordered with mutual understanding between Jammu and Kashmir Police and Army official to probe the alleged beating of a constable and Special Police Officer (SPO) and snatching of their weapons and money by some army officials in Doda district today.

IG S P Vaid, in a written statement tonight, said police and DELTA Force constituted a team headed by DIG Doda-Udhampur range and brigade commander concerned to conduct a spot verification in order to ascertain the facts of the case.

The state police accused some army personnel, including a captain and two junior commission officers (JCOs), of beating a constable and a SPO and snatching their weapons and Rs 70,000 at Gowari under Gandoh police station in Doda district.

According to a written statement issued by the Police Control Room, Jammu, constable Balwant Singh of Doda police station along with one SPO was on his way to Tipri and on reaching Gowari, an army Captain along with other army officials waylaid the police personnel and took them to an army camp.

The police said at gun-point both of them were mercilessly beaten and the armymen took away their cash and weapons. Both of them were admitted to the SDH hospital, Gandoh. A case was registered in this regard.

Meanwhile, eyewitness told UNI that the constable and SPO misbehaved with some villagers and beat them in a drunken state. The army interfered in the matter on the request of villagers and brought them in camp in a drunken state, they added.
