Parliamentary committee on air connectivity with southern region

New Delhi, Feb 19 (UNI) The parliamentary consultative committee attached to the ministry of civil aviation met in Kochi today and focused on airport infrastructure and air connectivity in southern India.

The members were informed that air traffic during 2005-06 had undergone a massive increase over 2004-05: aircraft movements had gone up by 17 per cent, passengers up by 24 per cent and cargo up by 10 per cent.

Across the airports of southern India, aircraft movements had gone up by 30 per cent, passengers up by 33 per cent and cargo up by 10 per cent. Southern India accounts for almost one-third share of entire air traffic of the country.

In 2005-06, aircraft movements in the country were 0.84 million of which 0.26 million were in southern India (30.9 per cent).

Total passenger traffic in India during this period was 73.35 million of which southern India accounted for 22.24 million (30.3 per cent of the total). A total of 14,04,000 tonnes of cargo was handled all over the country in 2005-06 of which 4,45,000 tonnes -- 31.7 per cent -- was handled in south India alone.
