Opposition's 12-hr statewide bandh ends peacefully

Agartala, Feb 19 (UNI) Over 2,200 agitators were arrested from different parts of Tripura today following the dawn-to-dusk state-wide bandh called by the NSUI.

The strike, called in support of NSUI's charter of demands, ended peacefully this evening, official sources said.

Among the arrested were Congress MLA Sudip Roybarman and other leaders. NSUI, however, put the number of arrested persons at five times more.

The bandh was to protest against last Thursday's alleged police atrocities on NSUI activists while they were going to submit a memorandum to the Chief Secretary in support of their charter of demands.

Additional Director General of Police R K Shukla told UNI that despite a few minor incidents, the situation was under control.

Vehicles, including inter-state bus services and lorries plied normally through the National Highway under heavy police escort.

Busiiness establishments, shops and markets, however, remained closed. Attendance in most nationalised banks and LICI offices was almost nil.
