Mizo religious leader opposes Mithun sacrifice
Aizawl, Feb 19: After animal rights activists, various religious bodies have opposed the proposed Sechhun ceremony (spearing of Mithuns) in Chapchar Kut, the biggest Mizo festival.
Christian scholar Dr P C Biaksiama has announced that this ceremony is aimed to stop the work of Satan and it was directly linked to the old Mizo heathen religious practices.
''It will be better for Mizo Christian society to completely disassociate with the ceremony,'' Dr Biaksiama said.
Chapchar Kut, organised by the state Art and Culture department and Young Mizo Association (YMA) would be celebrated on March 9.
Chapchar Kut Committee Bawihchhingpuii Chairman, however, said that the real 'Sechhun' would not be enacted.
Earlier, Association for Environment Preservation(ASEP) in Mizoram head New World Laldingliana has objected to the Mizo traditional Sechhun and threatened to sacrifice his life than let an innocent animal be killed in the "Chapchar Kut".
Sechhun goes against the provisions of Section 11 of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, IPC and The Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, he said, adding that he was willing to offer his own life instead of animals.
