Diwana, Panipat, Feb 19: Unlike the high-powered explosives used in Mumbai train blasts, the explosions in the Delhi-Attari Samjhuata Express past midnight were triggered with the use of low-intensity explosives and kerosene, according to forensic experts.

''To cause large scale destruction, low intensity explosives were probably used to trigger blasts and kerosene to ignite fire,'' Forensic laboratory Haryana Director J S Mahanwal told to reporters here.

Though the actual nature of the explosives and the modus operandi of the blasts would be known later, at present it seemed that kerosene bottles were used as a catalyst to spread the fire, triggered by low-intensity explosives like sulphur or nitrate, he added.

Mr Mahanwal said the recovery of two pipe bombs, 2 IEDs and over a dozen kerosene bottles from three compartments revealed that the terrorists had adopted a new modus operandi this time.

Terrorists have mostly caused blasts using high intensity explosives like RDX.
