Kerala seeks Central nod for Russian participation in Vizhinjam
New Delhi, Feb 19 (UNI) Kerala today asked the Centre to explore the possibility of involving a Russian public sector firm in the construction of the much-delayed Vizhinjam harbour project in Thiruvananthapuram.
Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan told mediapersons here that he had discussed the issue with Defence Minister A K Antony.
He said the Russian company --Rosoboron Services--had expressed interest in the project in the wake of the denial of permission by the Centre to a Chinese company, which was selected through a global tender for the execution of the Vizhinjam project, on security grounds.
Mr Achuthanandan said he urged Mr Antony to inquire about the Russian firm and explore the possibility of their participation in the project so that further delay in the execution of the Vizhinjam harbour could be avoided.
He said the Russian firm might also have expertise and technology to expedite the construction of the Vizhinjam Container Terminal project.
The Chief Minister said he sought the help of the minister to give more orders to the Kerala-based companies, including the state-owned Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (KELTRON), from the Defence ministry.
He called on Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy and sought funds from the Centre for the proposed Kochi Metro rail project. Mr Reddy agreed to consider a pilot project proposed by the state to improve water transport in Kochi city by linking canals. This was proposed to reduce traffic congestion on Kochi roads.
Mr Achuthanandan met Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Minister Kumari Shelja and sought more funds for rehabilitation of slum dwellers and also for the rehabilitation of those dwelling on both sides of state's canals.
