Bangalore, Feb 19 (UNI) The Women Entrepreneurs Committee of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) and Women's Chamber of Industry and Commerce (WCIC), Sri Lanka, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote trade and investment among women entrepreneurs of the two countries.

Speaking after signing the MoU, FKCCI Committee Chairperson Uma Reddy said that under the pact, FKCCI would help set up village based resource centres in the island nation to train women in candle and doll making and manufacturing other cottage industry products.

It would also source raw materials from Karnataka to such centres and arrange for training and marketing. The Karnataka women entrepreneurs would in turn scout for market for their products in Sri Lanka and use the neighbouring country as a base to export their products to other countries.

WCIC Chairperson Ramya Weerakoon said the WCIC Joint Secretary and herself were on a two-day visit to the State to invite women entrepreneurs from India to take part in the Business Trade Fair, to be held in Colombo during July this year. The Indian women entrepreneurs could showcase their products in the fair and use Sri Lanka as a gateway to the European Union.

''There is a big potential for Indian women entrepreneurs who produce handicraft items to export their wares to the EU. I see they concentrate only on the local market, while there is a large market in the EU where such products are in great demand. Sri Lanka can act as a gateway for such exports,'' she said.

WCIC was scouting for horticulture firms in Bangalore to import varieties of horticultural plants and products. She had visited some farms in the city and inked pacts with the local producers.
