Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide in K'taka
Sirsi, Karnataka, Feb 19 (UNI) Unable to repay his agricultural loans availed from cooperative societies, a farmer committed suicide by consuming poison at his paddy field at Ramapur, near here, late last night, police today said.
The farmer Narayana Yallappa Kurubar (45), who owned six to seven acres of fertile land, had borrowed about Rs two lakhs from local cooperative societies for agricultural purpose.
He took the extreme step following crop failure due to scanty rainfall this year and the cooperative societies pressing him to repay the loans immediately. His wife had died two months ago, unable to make both ends meet.
