12-hour bandh begins peacefully

Agartala, Feb 19 (UNI) A 12-hour bandh called by NSUI, Tripura Congress student's wing, began peacefully this morning. No untoward incident has been reported so far.

A police source told UNI here about 100 agitators had been arrested from various parts of the state for picketing. However, Tripura Road Transport Corporation (TRTC) bus services were not disrupted.

Most of the shops, business establishments and schools remained closed.

West Agartala police station had arranged vehicles for transportation of air passengers to and from the airport here.

Security measures throughout the state had been tightened.

Tension prevailed since Thursday evening after a pitched battle between NSUI activists and security forces during the submission of a memorandum to the state Chief Secretary by the wing in support of its charter of demands.

The city and other district headquarters and sub-divisional towns were brought under the cover of tight security and additional police, TSR, CRPF pressed into service for maintaining a close vigil on the situation.

NSUI, called the bandh to protest police atrocities on the activists here. The wing has also demanded the cancellation of all appointment letters distributed against huge amount and statement of the Chief Minister in this regard.
