Ethiopia encourages foreign investment: Ambassador

Puducherry, Feb 17 (UNI) Gennet Zewide, the Ethiopian Ambassador to India, today said her country was encouraging foreign investment in areas like agriculture, textile, leather and cement industries among others.

Talking to mediapersons after visiting some educational and agricuture institutions here, she said, Ethiopia has improved considerably after its economy was liberalised in 1992.

Ms Zewide said, presently, 89 per cent of the children were enrolled in primary education as against 19 per cent before 1992.

As far as primary and secondary education was concerned, her country was self-sufficent in teaching faculty and qualified Indian professors were being recruited for universities and other higher educational institutions in Ethiopia, she added.

She said it would be nice, if the Pondicherry University starts a branch in her country either in agriculture or in medicine. Her country was looking for help and expertise in areas of agriculture, fisheries, dairy, education, among others from Puducherry, she added.

Puducherry Agriculture and Industry Minister, V Vaithilingam, who was present said the administration would consider to send an expert team to Ethiopia to train the students and professors.
