Delhi: CPM opposes dismissal of Mulayam Govt.
New Delhi, Feb 17: The CPI(M) today openly came out in support of the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government in Uttar Pradesh, which runs the risk of dismissal after the Supreme Court verdict disqualifying 13 BSP MLAs, who had defected from the party.
"Majority or minority of the government should be tested on the floor of the House," CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat told reporters just before the start of the CPI(M) two-day Polit Bureau meet here.
Mr Karat's remarks assume significance in the backdrop of last night's meeting of the Congress Core Group on the political developments in UP.
Mr Karat said his party did not agree with the opinion of legal experts that the Mulayam Government had become illegal in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling.
Barring CPI(M) veterans H S Surjeet and Jyoti Basu, all other members of the Polit Bureau are attending the meeting.
