CPI protests two children norm for local bodies elections

Patna, Feb 17 (UNI) The Bihar CPI today urged the state government to withdraw the ordinance forbidding those candidates having more than two children from contesting local bodies election.

In a release issued here, state secretary of CPI Badri Narain Lal said that the ordinance was not only 'unconstitutional' but also against the spirit of the national population policy adopted in 2000. He said the population policy of the government advocated for couple to voluntarily adopt the family planning measures to have two children.

'' The ordinance is a sort of coercive step of the state government which would lead to foeticides and sex ratio imbalances,'' he cautioned.

Mr Lal said several states including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh had already withdrawn such kind of provisions adding the decision of the Bihar government was irrational.

He said the new provision would deprive most of the weaker sections and minorities from contesing elections which could trigger strong resentments among them.
