Srinagar, Feb 16: Life was crippled today in Kashmir following a general strike called by several religious and separatist organisations in protest against Israel for starting the construction work near al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

Shops in the summer capital here remained closed and traffic was off the roads. However, some vehicles were seen plying in the uptown area.

Work in government and semi-government departments and other commercial establishments remained affected as majority of employees stayed home in response to the call.

A report from Baramulla in north Kashmir said a total shutdown was observed in the town, including Sopore. Streets wore a deserted look as shops and business establishments remained closed.

Most of the shops in the Anantnag town remained closed in response to the call. However, traffic was near normal on all routes.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people took to streets in the down town city in protest against Isreal.

The processionists, raising slogans against Israel and United States President George Bush, marched through different streets, including Budshah Chowk near here. However, they dispersed peacefully.

They demanded immediate stop of the construction work near the al-Aqsa mosque.
