New Delhi, Feb 16 (UNI) Rubbishing protests by Left parties, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has gone ahead with privatisation process of Delhi and Mumbai airports to cope up with rising air passenger traffic and make them world-class equipped with modern amenities.

Tomorrow, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will lay the foundation stone for a new integrated terminal building of the airport in national capital named after her mother-in-law.

The GMR-led consortium which holds 74 per cent stake in Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL), the newly-formed joint venture company, says the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport will rank among the best in world in coming years.

With remaining 26 per cent stake, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will continue to manage air traffic control -- a crucial component of any airport -- and oversee security and fire-control related issues. DIAL is a joint venture company consisting of GMR Group, Airports Authority of India, Fraport, Eraman Malaysia and India Development Fund.

Eventually, Delhi airport -- the second busiest in the country -- will have 130 check-in counters, 74 aerobridges, automated passenger movers, restaurants, shopping joints and a high-speed train connection to the city.

Phase one of the master plan will see construction of a new passenger terminal building (Terminal 3) which will cater to both domestic and international passengers. It will be ready before the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
