Aizawl, Feb 16 (UNI) Despite small variation in seasonal cycle of the Northeast, meteorologists have forecast a short spring in the region in the next couple of weeks.

Talking to UNI Deputy Director General of Regional Meteorological Centre D Chakraborty said, NE states except Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim would experience a brief feel of spring in the first week of March.

The region experienced a chilly weather early this year and winter is about to leave the region, as weather factors indicated the onset of spring after a medium spell of rain this week.

''Spring is not prominently felt in the north east and there is no period specified for autumn. Spring in a seasonal cycle and a few days during the onset of summer is considered as spring in NE,'' Mr Chakraborty said.

He, however, predicted that people would 'feel better' this year in most part of the region as the weather will be pleasent even in the next few weeks since the region received a good rainfall during winter.

Stating that the retreating monsoon during the dry spell was satisfactory, Mr Chakraborty said except Arunachal Pradesh, all other NE states received excess amount of rainfall in the past two weeks though there was deficit rainfall during last monsoon.

According to statistics, Tripura received (+)187%, Mizoram (+)164%, Nagaland (+)95%, Manipur (+)50%, Asom (+)41% and Meghalaya (+)1% rainfall than normal during this winter, ''which is quite good for summer fruits in the region'', he maintained.

Record shows that NE states had received deficit rainfall in the last 21 years while the region recorded 37% less rainfall in 1992.

Only in 1988, 1993, 1997 and 2003 did Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland received 17%, 9%, 2% and 3% excess annual rainfall respectively.

Mr Chakraborty said, ''due to the western disturbance light to moderate rain occurred in the region during the past fortnight. But the sky is now almost clear, as there is no chance of any more rain shortly in the region except in Arunachal Pradesh.'' However, predictions have said moderate rain and thundershower are likley to occur at many places over Arunachal Pradesh while light rain at a few places over Asom, and Meghalaya is possible in the next two days.

It also added that a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect a few places of the region during the onset of summer - first part of March over Sikkim, Asom, Meghalaya, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh but there is no chance of any more cold wave in the region this year.

The prevalance of westerly jet-stream 200km/hr over eastern Himalaya was responsible for the sudden drop of maximum temperature between 3 and 4 degree celsius during the first week of January in NE while Tripura and Asom witnessed the coldest weather this year.

Meanwhile, almost dry weather will prevail over the region in the next week while night temperature may change at a bearable limit over Asom, Meghalaya, Manipur, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, it added.
