Srinagar, Feb 16 (UNI) Police burst teargas shells and also resorted to baton charge to disperse anti Israel demonstrators in the down town here this afternoon.

Official sources said hundreds of people took to streets at Nowhatta immediately after Friday prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid this afternoon.

Raising anti Israel and United States slogans, the demonstrators were moving towards the main chowk when police stopped them.

However, when the demostrators insisted that they should be allowed to move foward and also pelted stones, police resorted to lathicharge.

Police later burst teargas shells when it had no affect on them.

About a dozen people were injured in the clash, sources said.

A number of peaceful processions were taken out in other parts of the city in protest against Israel for starting construction work near al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.
