New Delhi, Feb 16 (UNI) Upholding the new tradition of bringing ''justice at doorsteps'', the National Human Rights Commission held its first 'Camp Sitting' in Lucknow and took up nearly 1,000 cases for hearing.

Among the cases taken up in Lucknow between January 18-20 were those of custodial deaths, electrocution deaths and pension of retired personnel, said NHRC chairman Shivaraj V Patil.

''On custodial deaths, the commission held meetings with the concerned Secretary and sought Magisterial inquiry reports into all such cases within three months and not later than six months.'' Action would be taken against those who failed to submit the reports, he said.

''On electrocution deaths, the UP government was asked to raise the compensation package to Rs 50,000 from the present Rs 20,000.

This would be applicable to old cases as well.'' Eight cases of retired personnel were also taken up, he said, adding, the commission would hold its next 'Camp Sitting' in Patna on April 19-21.
