CPI condemns govt's high price rise led economic growth policy

New Delhi, Feb 16 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (CPI) urged the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take immediate resolute steps to bring down the spiralling price rise and control inflation.

In a press statement issued here today, the CPI has strongly reiterated its demand for scraping the forward trading in food grains and other essential commodities. The Government should take effective measures for de-hoarding, restoring and strengthening the Public Distribution System (PDS). They should effectively implement the provisions of the Essential Commodities Act, stop the policy of import of food grains at high prices and offer better prices to the farmers to strengthen the procurement system.

The party, in order to create public pressure on the Government, has decided to hold rallies in the state capitals and all important cities and towns. This will be followed by Satyagraha in various parts of the country.

Condemning the present economic system where the Government boasts of a high growth rate, the party noted that in real terms this has no meaning since it does not bring any cheer to the average Indian as the point-to-point inflation on monthly basis shows the current rate to be above eight per cent in rural areas and more than seven per cent in urban areas.
