Tension prevails after the damage to temple wall compound
Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, Feb 15 (UNI) Tension prevailed in Kancheepuram today when the people vehemently opposed the break of the Amman temple compound wall by a village barber with hammer.
Talking to newspersons here the district revenue official Seethalaxmi said the temple building belonged to 'Poromboke' land. A peace committee would conduct a meeting at District Revenue office on February 17 and a decision in this regard would be taken on that day, she added.
Ms Seethalaxmi said necessary steps were initiated to punish the wrong-doers.
Police said the ancient temple was situated at Chembarambakkam in this district. Since the temple did not have a compound wall for a long time the villagers constructed a wall around the temple. Some vested interests, however, allegedly insisted the revenue department officials to break the wall as it belonged to 'Poromboke' land.
A police team and revenue officials rushed to the spot and pacified the villagers.
