States to promote conjunctive use of ground and suface waters
New Delhi, Feb 15 (UNI) The 12th Meeting of the National Water Board held recently has recommended that States where the rate of ground water replenishment is low, should come up with proposals for sustainable development of utilisable ground water resource for catering to the rising multi-sectoral demand.
For regulation and control of over-exploitation of ground water resources, a model bill was circulated to the states by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) for enabling the states to promote conjunctive use of surface and ground water resources.
Several states had initiated action to adopt suitable legislation for controlling the overuse of ground water resources.
It was broadly agreed to expedite implementation of the same in a time bound manner.
All other States will revisit the issue of enacting suitable legislation for regulation of ground water and take urgent action in this regard, an official release said.
