Six Vedic scholars to be honoured

Bangalore, Feb 15: Six Vedic scholars from different states have been selected by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for the prestigious Shri Guru Gangeshwarananda Veda Rathna Puraskar-2005 awards.

In a release here yesterday, the Bhavan said the awardees included eminent Sanskrit scholars Dr N S Anantha Rangacharya (Karnataka) for Rig Veda, Dr Damodar Jha (Punjab) and Dr Kapil Deva Dwivedi for Veda and Sanskrit. The other awardees are P S Ananthanarayana Somayaji (Tamil Nadu) for Krishna Yajur Veda, Shivaram Tripathi (Uttar Pradesh) for Sama Veda and K V Balasubramanyan for Atharvana Veda.

The award, carrying a cash prize of Rs one lakh each, a Tamra Patra and an idol of Guru Gangeshwarananda, was instituted by the seer's devotees along with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. So far, 27 eminent scholars have been honoured.

The awards would be distributed on February 25 at Vrindavan in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, the release added.
