Police have power to act against hotels staging cabarets: SC

New Delhi, Feb 15 (UNI) The Supreme Court today disposed of the appeal of the government of Puducherry against Madras High Court judgement, which had set aside its order of imposing a blanket ban on classical dances in hotels in the Union Territory.

A bench comprising Justices A R Lakshmanan and Altamas Kabir granted liberty to the state police to take appropriate action against the hotels which were staging cabaret dances after obtaining licences for classical dances.

The state government had alleged that the hotels were misusing their licences to make money by staging obscene performances under the garb of classical dances.

The court, however, said the police have enough power to deal with such hoteliers and that blanket ban on classical dances was not justified.
