Mumbai, 15 Feb (UNI) The Bombay High Court today sought details from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, as to what efforts were made by the corporation to fill in vacant posts of more than a thousand teachers in Urdu and Hindi medium schools run by it.

Hearing a PIL filed by Advocate M P Vashi, a Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice H L Ghokhale and Justice V M Kanade also sought information whether the local body would relax requisite educational qualifications to fill up these vacancies.

Vashi pointed out that 1464 posts of teachers are vacant in Urdu and Hindi medium schools, run by the corporation. As a result, in some of the schools teachers are forced to manage tens of classes.

The corporation's counsel said that last year the corporation had published advertisements for 100 posts of teachers in Urdu Medium schools, but in response received only 12 applications. This indicates that teachers from Urdu and Hindi mediums are not available in the city, the counsel added.
