Howrah, Feb 15 (UNI) A Howrah Court today set an example by passing a verdict against 31 convicts who were tried under a murder case.

The convicts were arrested from Bhabanipur village on October 12, 1992 following a scuffle over a trustee pond which lead to the death of one Chandinanda Maity(38).

In 1998, the lower court acquitted them of the offence and the petitioner had filed a case in Calcutta High Court. The High Court, however, referred the case back to the lower court.

Additional Sessions Judge of Howrah second court Chittaranjan Jana found the accused guilty of the crime and sentenced three convicts life imprisonment under section 302 and 149 of IPC.

The other 28 convicts were charged under IPC section 148, 325, 379 and 447 and were awarded 3-7 years of imprisonment.
