12 K'taka districts declared naxal-infested
Bangalore, Feb 15 (UNI) As many as 12 districts, including Udupi, Chickmagalur and Bidar, have been declared as naxalite-prone in Karnataka, the Legislative Council was informed today.
Replying to a question raised by Mr Aravinda Limbavalli of the BJP, Home Minister M P Prakash, in his written reply, said Dakshina Kannada, Gulbarga, Bellary, Koppal, Chitradurga, Shimoga, Tumkur, Kolar and Raichur have also been declared as naxalite-prone.
The State Government had spent Rs 23 crore to take up developmental works in these districts. The naxalite menace had, however, not spread to any other district and as many as 102 Maoist activists have been arrested by the State police, he added.
In reply to another question raised by Mr Limbavalli, Mr Prakash said the State Government was seized of the matter that the world heritage centre Hampi had become a centre for terrorist activities.
The security personnel have taken special measures to contain terrorist activities in and around Hampi. The Government had not received any report about the alleged conversion of some temples into dargahs at the world heritage site.
Replying to a question raised by Mr Prakash K Rathod (Congress), the Minister said as many as 103 people were arrested in the recent riots in Bangalore, in which one boy was killed, 77 injured and over Rs one crore worth public and private properties were damaged.
The State Government had also taken measures to provide compensation to the affected people in the riots, he added.
