Poll candidates relax after hectic campaign

Patiala, Feb 14 (UNI) Exhausted after a hectic campaign in the run up to the polls in 115 of the 117 assembly segments and the Amritsar Parliamentary constituency held yesterday, most of the candidates in the electoral fray preferred to relax with their family members, even as friends and supporters came calling at their homes.

However, there were a few who remained busy thanking the voters of their constituencies.

A majority of the candidates could not be contacted as they had refused to take telephone calls. Chief Minister Amarinder Singh met a number of Congress leaders at his Moti Bagh residence here.

Capt Singh who contested the Patiala seat, stayed indoors and held a meeting with his senior Cabinet colleague Lal Singh who was in the fray from Dakala.

Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal stayed back in her constituency of Lehra Gagga in Sangrur district meeting a large number of her supporters. Her Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) challenger Prem Singh Chandumajra also remained confined to his assembly segment trying to make an assessment of the votes polled with his close aides.

Raja Narinder Singh, a former minister and SAD candidate from Nabha, attended a 'bhog' ceremony in a village in his Nabha constituency. His rival Randeep Singh of the Congress remained busy meeting his supporters at his residence.

However Congress rebel Ramesh Singla who contested as an independent went around Nabha town thanking the voters.

The late Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra's son-in-law, Harmail Singh Tohra, who fought a close battle in Dakala assembly constituency against Lal Singh of the Congress, remained confined to his Hira Nagar residence in the city meeting party workers, who gave him an estimate of the votes polled in different villages of the constituency.

Surjit Singh Rakhra of SAD, who had a tough campaign in Samana segment met his supporters at Rakhra village, while his rival Brahm Mohindra of the Congress refused to take any telephone calls.

Mrs Razia Sultana of the Congress, the only Muslim woman candidate who contested the polls, went around Malerkotla town expressing her gratitude to the voters and her supporters.
