EC to file FIR against NDTV for showing exit poll results

New Delhi, Feb 13 (UNI) The Election Commission (EC) today decided to file a First Information Report (FIR) against the news channel NDTV for telecasting instant exit poll results of the Punjab Assembly election, violating Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act.

According to EC sources, the section clearly states that no attempts should be made to influence the voters 48 hours before the poll date.

Election process can be influenced by showing instant exit poll results, the sources added.

The EC had earlier in the day served a show cause notice to the news channel for telecasting the instant Exit poll results which is violation of the rule.

The EC has asked them to explain their position by 1630 hours today but the channel had not submitted any explanation.

The commission was left with no other option but to file a FIR against NDTV, said EC sources.
