Delhi Govt committed to providing adequate water to rural areas
New Delhi, Feb 13 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said her government is committed to providing adequate water to rural areas of the capital.
After inaugurating Filter Water Supply at Neb Sarai and Saidullajab areas in South Delhi, she said a comprehensive plan had been chalked out for this purpose.
''Delhi government is committed to providing adequate water and power supply. With accelerated pace of development in all fields the scenario of Delhi will change before the 2010 Commonwealth Games,'' she said.
Delhi Jal Board had commissioned a city-wide study, with a planning perspective for 2011 and this study had created a workable model to commission 109 Underground Reservoirs. 59 UGRs have already been commissioned and 50 more would be commissioned by 2009, Ms Dikshit said.
This would go a long way in improving availability and ensuring pressure of water in various parts of Delhi, she added.
Delhi Jal Board had successfully augmented water supply to the city by increasing it from 570 Million Gallon per Day in 1998 to 815 MGD at present.
140 MGD Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plant had been commissioned but is presently able to treat only 55 MGD due to non-supply of adequate raw water from the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh.
DJB is also trying to cover more and more areas with Filter Water Supply wherever possible.
Works costing Rs 50 lakh involving laying of three kilometre length of water lines had been undertaken in order to extend filter water supply to Saidullajab and Neb Sarai.
Filtered Water Supply would ensure at least one-hour supply a day with good pressure.
Outer Delhi MP Sajjan Kumar, local MLA Balram Tanwar and councilor Satbir Singh were also present on the occasion.
