Register case against Army-police in custodial death case, JKSHRC

Srinagar, Feb 12 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir Human Rights Commission (JKHRC)) has directed the authorities to register a case against an army unit and two police officials in connection with alleged custodial killing of a government employee.

The Commission recommended ex-gratia relief of Rs one lakh and a government job for Sadiq's widow.

The commission gave its recommendation to the state government on a complaint filed by Zainab Begum, wife of the employee.

She had alleged that her husband Mohammad Sadiq, an employee of the Irrigation Department, was arrested by army in early 2003 and later tortured to death in Udhampur.

She said the body of Sadiq was found hanging in a house adjacent to the army camp on April 4, 2003.

Disposing of the petition, the Commission said the state government should direct police to register a case against concerned army personnel.

The commission also recommended action against the then SDPO, Mahore, and the then incharge of the concerned police post who is alleged to have tried to hush up the matter.
