Liquor, poppy husk seized on poll eve in Punjab

Barnala, Feb 12 (UNI) The police today seized 1500 cases of country made (desi) liquor from a godown opposite the rented accomodation of Congress candidate from here Kewal Singh Dhillon.

The police also seized 10 kg poppy husk from a car parked near the godown in Lakhi colony in the town, official sources here stated.

A case under various sections of the Excise Act and the NDPS Act has been registered against the owner of the godown and the car. The godown has been taken on hire by a relative of a local Congress leader. No arrests have been made so far.

Meanwhile Malkiat Singh Kittu, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate from the constituency staged a protest 'dharna' here demanding the registeration of a case against his Congress rival for violating the model code of conduct. He alleged that the liquor and poppy husk was meant to be distributed among voters by Congress workers.
