Hashimpura massacre survivor fails to identify accused

New Delhi, Feb 12 (UNI) A key witness in the Hashimpura massacre case, in which 42 people were murdered by 19 PAC jawan in 1987, failed to identify the personnel alleged responsible for the gory killings in a court here today.

The cross examination of the survivor, Md Usman, of the survivors of the massacre before Additional Sessions Judge N P Kaushik also began today.

His evidence assumes significance as it could a led to the prosecution of the jawans accused of killing 42 people in Hashimpura in May 1987.

The case was transferred from a Ghaziabad Court to the Tis Hazari court on the orders of the Supreme Court. The Uttar Pradesh government had allegedly shown little interest in pursuing the prosecution of the accused.

The Hashimpura massacre occurred during the riots that broke out in Meerut in May 1987 following the then Rajiv Gandhi-led Central government's decision to open the disputed site of worship at Ayodhya to devotees.
