New Delhi, Feb 12: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has recommended a dress code for its members as part of its image building exercise.

The dress code was approved by the Council of ICAI earlier this month with ''a view to ensuring dignity in appearance and as a part of brand building of the profession,'' an institute spokesperson here said.

A long buttoned-up coat with dhoti or churidar pyjama has been deemed suitable Indian attire for male members or full-sleeved shirts with trousers and shoes when he wishes to adopt the Western style of dressing.

For women, it is the Indian saree or salwar kameez and a pair of trousers and a shirt when opting for a corporate look.

According to the spokesperson, members will be encouraged to wear a suit or a blazer with tie (preferably of the ICAI) as may be appropriate for the occasion.

In the event of its members appearing before any judicial forum, the ICAI has waived its dress code to allow them to don the attire prescribed for appearing before such forum.

Similarly, in respect of members in employment, the dress will be governed by the rules, if any, prescribed by the organisation concerned, in lieu of the dress mentioned above.

Noting that the purpose of prescribing the dress code was to ''uphold the dignity and to enhance decorum'', members have been asked to adhere to the dress code when they represent before any statutory authority, or when attending a business meeting or important events. On all other occasions, members have been advised to be properly turned out in their professional capacity.

The dress code laid down by the ICAI had received an overwhelming response from its members, the spokesperson said.
