New Delhi, Feb 12 (UNI) Continuing with its mission to actively participate in all endeavours which contribute to peace, a Border Security Force contingent was today flagged off by Home Minister Shivraj V Patil on a 'special mission' for maintenance of law and order during elections in Congo.

The 125-member contingent, on its way to Lubumbashi in Democratic Republic of Congo (Central Africa) -- facing severe internal conflicts -- comprising seven 'Officers', 14 'Subordinate Officers' and 104 'Other Ranks,' including 10 women Subordinate Officers/Constables, would help restore law and order there and create a conducive atmosphere for holding elections, said the BSF here.

The contingent, which leaves for Congo tomorrow, is led by Commandant Akhileswar Singh and is a follow-up of the first contingent to the country which returned recently after 15 months of a creditable performance there.

With proven track record in containing the insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the country, the BSF takes this mission as another step for it in contributing to security management on foreign soil.

BSF has taken part in several peace-keeping missions in Namibia, Cambodia, Bosnia, Sudan and Kosovo.

Additional Director General M L Kumawat and Union Home Secretary V K Duggal were present during the flagging off ceremony.
