Fashion designers' share to touch Rs 2,000 cr

New Delhi, Feb 11: The share of budding and established fashion designers in fashion industry will increase 900 per cent to Rs 2,000 crore by 2012 from the current level of about Rs 200 crore.

In the projected share of fashion designers at Rs 2,000 crore, the share of established designers is estimated to be Rs 1,200 crore as against Rs 800 crore that of budding designers, a statement released by industry body Assocham on 'Potential for Fashion Industry' said here, today.

It further said the contribution from the budding fashion designers to fashion industry will be more than triple in the next five years with their sales volumes increasing substantially because of demand factor coupled with reasonable pricing and availability of multiple exotic and indigenous designs.

The turnover of overall fashion industry both in retail and non-retail segment as of now is estimated between Rs 34,000 crore to Rs 35,000 crore, in which the contribution of apparel segment alone has already touched Rs 16,000 crore, the statement added.

''The government should establish more fashion institutes across the country with R&D facilities developed in each state or atleast every zone so that the regional expertise in apparel are brought to light and blended with other regional and international designs to produce high breed design,'' Assocham President Venugopal N Dhoot said.

The industry body estimated the contribution of established fashion designers to fashion industry would go down in percentage roughly by 20 per cent by 2012.

Their current contribution to fashion industry is estimated at about 80 per cent.

While in the current Rs 200 crore size of fashion wears, the contribution of budding designers is just about 10 per cent of it to Rs 20 crore, the chamber asserted.
