CM to take action against Akhtar, if allegations are proved

Chennai, Feb 11 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi today assured that action would be taken against the controversial Deputy Inspector General of Police Shakeel Akthar, if allegations against him were proved true or if the Centre or its intelligence agencies apprised the state government about it.

In a statement here today Mr Karunanidhi dismissed Jayalalithaa's allegations, that the controversial police official was given a new assignment overnight, as baseless and said the official was relieved from the union service on January 22 and returned to state service on February 1, and he was given a new assignment on February 6.

He also pointed out that the DMK government never made all India service officials, like IAS and IPS, to wait for weeks or months together for giving a new assignment under state service. The DMK government used to give new jobs, for those who returned to the state service, as early as possible. It was during AIADMK regime under Ms Jayalalithaa that the officials were made to wait indefinitely, besides posting senior officials for the unimportant posts, he alleged.

He took strong exception over the reported remarks of Ms Jayalalitha that Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil or his deputy S Reghupathy could have answered her charges against Mr Akthar.
