Nationwide Bank strike on February 23

Kolkata, Feb 10 (UNI) Banking services throughout the country are likely to be crippled once again on February 23 in response to a one- day nationwide strike, called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) to press for its demands.

Announcing the strike decision, UFBU spokesman and General Secretary of Bengal Provicial Bank Employees Association Rajen Nagar here today said the strike has been called to protest the union government's anti-labour policy and the high-handedness of bank management against their own employees.

"We also strongly condemn the handing over of the chargesheet to about 7,000 employees of Central Bank of India by their management for participating in the nationawide strike on January 22," Mr Nagar said and demanded immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the 'punitive action".

Otherwise the CBI employees would resort to an indefinite strike from February 22, he said.

Meanwhile, to mark the end of their month-long agiation, about 5,000 bank employees here today organised a mass dharna in Central Kolkata where several leaders of UFBU,a conglomerate of all the seven major bank unions, presented their views and announced the decision for another nationwide strike in protest on February 23.
