Italian PM sees India as a super power in three decades

Chennai, Feb 10 (UNI) Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi today said India would become a super power and the third largest economy of the world in the next three decades.

Delivering the sesquicentennial commemorative lecture at University of Madras here, Mr Prodi pointed out that India accounted for 1.5 per cent of the world's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and would triple its share by 2050 to reach 12 per cent.

He said India would outdo Europe, US and China in the next five years by creating a quarter of all the new jobs.

Referring to India's industrial boom, he said the country is the world's fifth largest telecommunication market, fourth in the production of drugs and medicines, third in placing orders for new aircrafts and second in the production of computer applications.

India is the world's largest democracy that devotes six per cent of its GDP to education.

India had the world's largest film industry and was a major contributor to the UN's peacekeeping operations, he added.
