UP GOV attracts students' ire on Sanskrit comments

Varanasi, Feb 9 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Governor T V Rajeswar today faced the ire of Sampoornanand Sanskrit University students here over his comments on the ancient language.

Mr Rajeswar was chairing the varsity's convocation ceremony as the Chancellor of Universities. During his address, he remarked that 'in today's space age, students have to adopt to latest developments, or else they cannot survive for long with their bullock cart age attitude'.

He observed that Sanskrit students can at best become priests or teachers. ''I would try to get the University Act amended to make the English language compulsory,'' he added.

Soon after his address, students threw away the degrees and medals they had received and some even threw chairs at the podium.

The governor was protected by the security personnel present there.

The organisers managed to conduct the National Anthem and the Governor was escorted out of the campus under heavy police security.

Later, students hurled stones at his motorcade as it passed through the main road.

The police also resorted to a lathichage in which five students were injured.

At least one protestor was detained.
