Seven injured in rival group clashes

Kolkata, Feb 9 (UNI) Altogether seven students were injured, three of them seriously, when rival groups clashed during a campaign against land acquisition here today.

Police said three of the injured, including a girl student of Jadavpur University was admitted to a hospital after supporters of the CPIM backed SFI and Chatra Chatri Sangahati Manch, predominantly ultra-left students' group, clashed in Sarsuna College on the Eastern fringes of the city.

The incident occurred when the Sanhati Manch member were holding a gate meeting and distributing leaflets as part of a campaign against acquisition of agricultural land by the Left Front government for setting up industries.

A convention of students and teachers was going on in the college at that time.

Manch members alleged that the SFI activists and the college teachers jointly attacked them without provocation and severly beat them up.

Whle one of the Manch supporters received a serious head injury, a woman member broke her hand.

The Manch is predominantly an organisation comprising students of the Jadavpur University, Presidency College and Calcutta Medical College.
