FIR against army as people in Kashmir toke to streets

Srinagar, Feb 9 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir police today registered a case against the Rashtriya Rifles (RR) for allegedly killing a civilian in an encounter in south Kashmir last night.

Official sources said the FIR was registered by the police against the RR after local people alleged that a civilian Mohammad Afzal Kumar was killed by them.

They alleged that there was no firing in the area and that Kumar was killed by the security forces without any provocation.

However, a defence ministry spokesman said three soldiers, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) were killed and two others wounded in a militant attack in the area last night.

About two thousand people took to the streets this morning and blocked traffic on the road in protest against the killing of Kumar.

The demonstrators, raising slogans against the security forces, demanded immediate arrest of RR pesonnel responsible for the killing of Kumar.
