New Delhi, Feb 9 (UNI) The Congress today welcomed the decision of the Manmohan Singh government to disinvest shares in three public sector undertakings in the power sector, and asserted that all the constituents and the supporting parties were "consulted" beforehand.

AICC Spokesman Abishek Manu Singhvi told mediapersons that the decision was taken after full consultation with different elements of the political coalition at the Centre.

On the opposition from the Left parties to the decision, he maintained that the money so earned was to be spent on improving human development indicators.

Asked if there was a consensus among the coalition partners and the supporting Left parties, he said in a coalition set up the government could evolve a consensus only to the extent possible.

In such a set-up, no individual partner would have a veto power.

But what was important was consultation. Every political party was entitled to their views. Ultimately, the government would do whatever were essential for the country.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs yesterday gave its approval for sale of 10 per cent pre-issue paid up equity of Rural Electrification Corporation Limited (REC), five per cent of Power Grid Corporation of Indian Limited(PGCIL) and five per cent of National Hydro- Electrical Power Corporation Limited (NHPC).
